OBSESSIVE-COMPULSIVE SPECTRUM DISORDERS

There are various conditions that have obsessive-compulsive qualities that are quite similar to OCD . These disorders are frequently described as Obsessive-Compulsive Spectrum Disorders, many of which are treated primarily with Cognitive-Behavioral Therapy. Likewise, certain anxiety disorders have features similar to OCD, and also respond well to Cognitive-Behavioral Therapy. Below are some of the Obsessive-Compulsive Spectrum Disorders and related anxiety disorders that we treat at the OCD Center of Los Angeles:

Body Dysmorphic Disorder (BDD): The obsessive, irrational preoccupation with a defect in one's physical appearance. To learn more about this condition and its treatment, click here.

Hypochondria : The obsessive, irrational fear of having a serious disease or medical condition. To learn more about this condition and its treatment, click here.

Trichotillomania: The recurrent, compulsive pulling out of one's own hair, resulting in observable hair loss. To learn more about this condition and its treatment, click here.

Compulsive Skin Picking (CSP): The repetitive picking at one's own skin, to the extent that it causes damage. To learn more about this condition and its treatment, click here.

Panic Disorder: A history of panic attacks, followed by a persistent, intense fear of having additional panic attacks. To learn more about this condition and its treatment, click here.

Phobia: The recurrent, irrational fear of a specific object or situation. To learn more about this condition and its treatment, click here.

Social Anxiety: The excessive fear of social or performance situations. To learn more about this condition and its treatment, click here.

Olfactory Reference Syndrome (ORS): The obsessive, irrational fear that one's body is emitting a foul and unpleasant odor. To learn more about this condition and its treatment, click here.

Research has found that the most effective treatments for OCD and these related conditions are specific types of Cognitive-Behavioral Therapy (CBT). The primary CBT techniques used in treating these disorders are Exposure and Response Prevention (ERP), Imaginal Exposure, Interoceptive Exposure, Cognitive Restructuring, Meta-Cognitive Therapy, and Habit Reversal Training (HRT). For more information on Cognitive-Behavioral Therapy for the treatment of OCD and these related conditions, click here.

In addition to individual therapy, the OCD Center of Los Angeles also offers five weekly, low-fee, therapy/support groups for people with OCD and these related conditions. These groups are lead by our staff therapists, and use the same treatment protocol as our individual Cognitive-Behavioral Therapy program. For more information on these groups, click here.

If you are experiencing any of these conditions, and would like to discuss individual or group therapy for the treatment of OCD or an OC Spectrum Disorder at the OCD Center of Los Angeles, you can call us at (310) 335-5443, or click here to email us. If you live outside Southern California, we recommend that you contact a licensed Cognitive-Behavioral therapist in your local area.
